Lightning stoppage and FIFA safety protocols

The India–Uruguay match was suspended in the 26th–27th minute after lightning strikes were reported near Salt Lake Stadium. In line with FIFA safety guidelines for severe weather, referees and organisers directed players to their dressing rooms and advised spectators to move to covered areas. Play resumed after around 34 minutes once conditions were deemed safe, even as rain continued in the area.

Thapa’s historic equaliser

Anirudh Thapa’s 22nd-minute strike, following Ryan Williams’ rebound, made him only the second Indian to score against Uruguay after Manas Bhattacharjee in 1982. The goal energised the crowd and briefly unsettled the visitors, prompting mistakes in their play. Thapa’s assured performance in midfield offered a notable positive for India despite the eventual heavy defeat.

Momentum shift after restart

Following the extended break, Uruguay restored their lead almost immediately through Maximiliano Araujo. India’s defensive organisation faltered, and Uruguay capitalised with five more goals as fatigue and lapses set in. Coach Diego Forlan admitted the interruption benefited his side, illustrating how weather-related delays can change the course of a match.

Lessons for India ahead

Khalid Jamil must address discipline, concentration, and defensive organisation before facing New Zealand in November. The international window showed India could compete in phases but struggled to recover once momentum shifted. Attendance patterns and execution under pressure will be key as the team works toward building a stronger identity for future tournaments.
